CLAE presents FIVE BY FIVE: Mighty Crown x West One

Originating out of Yokohama, Japan in 1991, Mighty Crown has since become one of the premier reggae sound systems in the world, breaking boundaries and setting new standards for the genre.
It is only fitting that, to mark the celebration of their 20th anniversary, the world-renowned group approached CLAE to design a special edition shoe.

In addition to this special edition McQueen collaboration, We are honored to have Mighty Crown create a custom mix exclusively for CLAE’s Five By Five Series mixtape project. This custom soundscape serves as the inspiration for a visual art piece by our talented friend, the legendary graffiti artist turned abstract painter, West One.

Words vs Deeds

A great deal of attention has been payed to the design of Charles & Ray Eames, and some might even know their films, but the latest exhibit at LA's A+D museum focuses instead on the thinking that powered their office for over 40 years.

How Good Water Works

Our resources on this earth are finite. One thing we have learned from sci-fi films is that this will soon be a pressing issue, even for the worlds largest resource: water. Fortunately, The Ecology Center in southern California has reopened their How Good Water Works installation, representing our daily water footprint to enlighten and inspire us to become better conservationists. If you are in the area, we highly recommend you visit the installation to learn more about how you can help make a difference. [More]

Midnight Madness

October 15th is the 2nd most remembered date in October after Halloween on the 31st. The 15th is the last IRS filing date for those habitually late with taxes, which brings real terror to millions. But the 15th also brings much joy and passion to us hoop fans, as it kicks-off the beginning of the college basketball season with Midnight Madness. With the NBA lockout and no season in sight, college basketball ball will be getting extra attention this season. We obviously haven't had a chance to gauge the talent at Midnight Madness, but we think North Carolina and Kentucky will be the favorites to land in the Final Four and see two sleepers in Michigan and Gonzaga (Jim's pick for last 25 years plus). OR maybe it's time for the Big East to rise again. [More]

The Hunger

Vampires are having their day -- from teen literature to leading tv shows -- but no modern interpretation has or will ever strike a chord with us like Tony Scott's 1983 cult-classic, The Hunger. David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve star as a vampire couple living in NYC with a sexy young Susan Sarandon as the object of their affections. The soundtrack, featuring Schubert and Bauhaus and lots in between, plus a generous helping of stylish eighties elements make for an addictive movie that we turn to again and again. We hear Hollywood is attempting a remake....we all know how that will turn out. [More]

Freedom Suite

Our good friend (and collaborator for the Stussy pop-up shop a few years back) West One is opening a solo show of new work here in LA, this Friday October 30, at Environment on Beverly. Recognized and respected as one of the most prolific graffiti writers in New York throughout 80's and 90's with his crew Fame City, West has set a standard for large scale thematic murals and his transformation to abstract expression has been great to witness.

CLAE presents FIVE BY FIVE: DJ Clark Kent & Jamil GS

As the approaching Labor Day weekend signals the end of summer, CLAE is proud to present number two in its Five by Five series, pairing artists and DJs to inspire one another with soundscape and accompanying visuals. For the second installment, DJ Clark Kent, who needs no introduction to the world of music - or sneakers for that matter - has created the 10th installment of his “Grown and Sexy” mixtape series, timed perfectly to coincide with our ten year anniversary. Boundary-pushing photographer Jamil GS, who has been documenting all things sexy since landing in New York City from Denmark more than twenty years ago, offers up a singular, visual treat.
